Arjuna is a large deciduous tree with spreading crown and drooping branches.It attains a height of up to 35 m.Its bark is thick, grey to pinkish green, smooth, thin, coming off in irregular sheets.Leaves are usually sub-opposite, 10–15 cm long, and 4–7 cm broad; base is rounded or heart shaped, often unequal sided; veins are reticulate.

The arjuna grows to about 20–25 metres tall; usually has a buttressed trunk, and forms a wide canopy at the crown, from which branches drop downwards. It has oblong, conical leaves which are green on the top and brown below; smooth, grey bark; it has pale yellow flowers which appear between March and June; its glabrous, 2.5 to 5 cm fibrous woody fruit, divided into five wings.
A large evergreen tree with smooth grey bark exfoliating in large, thin, irregular sheets, often tinged with green and red. The leaves are oblong, opposite and sub-opposite. The leaves on the lower surface usually carry a pair of prominent glands close to the top of the leaf-stalk. The flowers are pale-yellowish-white, cup-shaped, resembling myrobalan, small and crowded on a long axis. It flowers from March to June when its honey attracts swarms of bees. The fruit is a winged nut, the leathery wings are usually five in number and are closely veined, the veins not spreading horizontally but tending to curve upwards. The fruit is tan-colored when dryppears between September and November.
The arjuna is one of the species whose leaves are fed on by the Antheraea paphia moth which produces the tassar silk, a wild silk of commercial importance.
Arjuna is said to have been used as the tree for achieved enlightenment, or Bodhi by the tenth Buddha (title) called "Anomadassi Buddha".
Its wood is used in boat and house building as it is very hard. Its wood is also used in the making of the agricultural implements and weapons too. It is grown in the cities and towns for the purpose of shade.
The Bark of the Arjuna tree contains calcium salts, magnesium salts, and glucosides has been used in traditional Ayurvedic herbalism .
Cultivation methods :
Its fruit is dried in the sunlight and than stored up to 6 -12 months. Seeds are pretreated by soaking in the water for 48 hours before sowing in beds. 8 – 9 months seedlings are better to transplant in the field.
